Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to common questions about Online Save Edit.

Is Online Save Edit safe to use?
Yes. All file processing happens entirely in your browser using JavaScript and the Web Crypto API. Your save files never leave your device — they are never uploaded to any server. Think of it like opening a file in Notepad, but smarter.
Which games are supported?
We support save editing for a growing list of games and game engines, including RPG Maker (MV/MZ/XP/VX/VX Ace), Unity, Ren'Py, GameMaker, Cookie Clicker, Terraria, Borderlands 1-4, No Man's Sky, Fallout Shelter, Pokémon, Elden Ring, Satisfactory, and Heroes of Might & Magic 3. See the full list on our <a href="/games" class="underline text-ink hover:text-ink-body">Games page</a>.
Do I need to create an account?
No. There are no accounts, no sign-ups, and no logins. Just visit the site, drop your save file, edit it, and download. That's it.
How do I use the editor?
<ol class="list-decimal list-inside space-y-1"><li>Go to the <a href="/" class="underline text-ink hover:text-ink-body">editor</a> or pick a game-specific editor.</li><li>Drop your save file onto the upload area (or click to browse).</li><li>The editor auto-detects the format and shows editable fields.</li><li>Change whatever you want — gold, items, stats, etc.</li><li>Click <strong>Download Save</strong> to get your modified file.</li><li>Place the file back in your game's save folder.</li></ol>
Where do I find my save files?
Save file locations vary by game and platform. Common locations include: <ul class="list-disc list-inside mt-1 space-y-0.5 text-ink-muted"><li>Steam: <code>Steam\userdata\[ID]\[AppID]</code> or <code>Documents\My Games\</code></li><li>Windows: <code>%APPDATA%</code>, <code>%LOCALAPPDATA%</code>, or <code>Documents\My Games\</code></li><li>macOS: <code>~/Library/Application Support/</code></li><li>Linux: <code>~/.local/share/</code> or <code>~/.config/</code></li></ul>Check our <a href="/guides" class="underline text-ink hover:text-ink-body">Guides page</a> for game-specific instructions.
Can I request a game that isn't supported yet?
Absolutely! Use the <a href="/request" class="underline text-ink hover:text-ink-body">Request a Game</a> form to let us know what you'd like to see. The more details you provide (save format, file extension, modding wiki links), the faster we can add support.
What if my save file gets corrupted?
The editor automatically keeps a backup of your original file in your browser session. You can download the untouched original at any time by clicking the "Download Original" button in the backup bar at the bottom of the page. We also strongly recommend making manual backups before editing.
Is this free? Will it stay free?
Yes, Online Save Edit is completely free and open source. There are no premium features, no paywalls, and no plans to charge. The project is maintained as a community service for gamers.
Does it work on mobile?
Yes, the site is fully responsive and works on mobile browsers. However, actually editing save files on mobile is less practical since most game saves are on desktop. The mobile experience is best for browsing supported games and reading guides.
Why does my browser say the site is not secure?
It shouldn't! We use HTTPS (SSL/TLS) for all connections. If you're seeing a security warning, make sure you're visiting <code class="text-ink-muted bg-hairline px-1 rounded-xs text-xs">https://onlinesaveedit.com</code> and not a typo or phishing copycat site.
Can I use this offline?
Yes! Once the page is loaded, all editor functionality works offline. The JavaScript runs entirely in your browser. Download the site or use your browser's "Save Page" feature for full offline access.
